The dictionary defines “wonderful” as anything that is so unusual or magnificent that causes wonder and amazement.
A “name” is the title by which one person is designated from another. It is a way for us to tell people, places and things apart. In our day, names don’t hold much significance.
It was not always this way. In Old Testament times, a name stood for a person’s “reputation, their fame and their glory.” Parents often gave children names that described the parent’s hopes and future expectations regarding that child.
A study of Bible names often reveals much about the personality of the people mentioned in the Bible. For instance, David means “Beloved.” Abraham means “Father of a multitude.” Jacob means “Trickster.” Goliath means “Splendor.” All of these people proved true to their names!
Isaiah tells us that the Christ child will have a “name”. Then he lists more than one name. “…and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6).
Why so many? One could never be sufficient to declare His glory.
“…thou shalt call his name JESUS:” “and he called his name JESUS.” (Matthew 1:21, 25).
Not “Names!” He is all of this at the same time! No wonder He will be called Wonderful! “JESUS — WHAT A WONDERFUL NAME IT IS”!
It is more wonderful to know it than it is just to hear it! It is more wonderful to know HIM than it is just to hear about HIM! Do you know Him?
